Crop water requirements: from direct measurement to tabled values - Teresa Afonso do Paço (ISA)
This presentation discusses the concept of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and the main methodologies that allow its measurement directly (water balance or micrometeorological methods) or indirectly (measurement of evapotranspiration components allow estimating ETc by using mathematical equations). Evaluation of plant water status is also addressed (plant and soil water potential – direct methods; e. g., stomatal aperture, and leaf surface temperature – indirect methods).Author Teresa Afonso do Paço – ISA

Modelling crop water requirements with the FAO56 approach - Paula Paredes ISA
This presentation focuses on the FAO56 approach, which describes reference evapotranspiration and crop evapotranspiration methodologies. At the same time, the presentation discusses some crop and soil characteristics such as the use of growing degreedays for setting the crop growth stages dates, the fraction of ground cover, root depth, field capacity, etc., to assess the crop water requirements.

Remote sensing techniques and irrigation – state of the art - Isabel Pôças ForestWISE CoLAB
In this presentation, topics related with remote sensing tools were focused: what it is, what it is used for, how it can be applied in irrigation and its management, and the type of satellites most used nowadays. At the end of this session, an overview of how to search and download Sentinel2 data from the Copernicus Open Access Hub was done.

Using satellite data to estimate evapotranspiration - Isabel Pôças ForestWISE CoLAB
This presentation shows how to estimate evapotranspiration using remote sensing approaches. Two methodologies were discussed. One methodology combines the FAO56 approach and the spectral vegetation indexes (VIs) obtained by satellite images to estimate basal crop coefficient (Kcb). The other methodology is based on the Surface Energy Balance (SEB) and uses remote sensing data as input.

Assessment of crop sustainability by modelling - Maria Rosário Cameira ISA-ULisboa
This presentation focuses on intensive irrigated agriculture and environmental pollution issues, mainly nitrate leaching into the water bodies. Two case studies are presented – olive orchard and maize field with drip and center pivot irrigation, respectively – and assessed using modelling through soil water balance and soil nitrogen balance.

Irrigation requirements modeling in a climate change context - João Rolim ISA-ULisboa
This presentation focuses on the methodology that can be applied to model water irrigation requirements in the context of climate change. The theoretical part was followed by the presentation of the different case studies, for different crops, from Portugal. In these case studies the climate change impacts expected are i) increase in the irrigation requirements; ii) water deficit of the rainfed crops and iii) irrigation system design – increase peak flows and in pipe diameters.

Determination of plant stomata density for different levels of water stress - hands on activity - Mariana Mota ISA-ULisboa
This hands-on presentation discusses a simplified methodology for estimating leaf stomatal density under different levels of water stress. The main topics covered were the care for
collecting the leaf, the time of collection, the preparation of the leaf with the placement of nail polish, the gluing of the tape to the leaf, the removal of the tape and gluing on the slide, the observation in the microscope and the counting of the stomata.

Sentinel 2 for estimating basal crop coefficients - hands on activity - Isabel Pôças ForestWISE CoLAb, Portugal
This practical session referred to calculate spectral vegetation indexes and basal crop coefficients over an agriculture field, using data from Sentinel-2 satellite images. This activity uses satellite images of Sentinel-2 on QGIS software to estimate Kcb values across the Butmir and Aleksandrovac regions, in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Application of proximal sensing methods for precision soil and crop management and sustainable use of water and nitrogen resources - Milica Čolović
To improve agricultural management such as water and nitrogen inputs, remote sensing images and indexes can be used. As an example, it is presented a case study developed in South Italy with some objectives for instance: i) integrating information derived from soil and crop proximal
sensors, ii) characterize soil spatial variability, iii) investigate relationship between hyperspectral VIs and both biometric and physiological crop parameters to increase the precision and sustainability of crop production.

Western Balkans in the spotlight: Opportunities for Collaborative Projects - Rui Munhá PERIN-FCT
In this session some opportunities for collaborative projects in Western Balkans countries are presented, provided by the European Research Council. The European Union strategic framework is based on six political priorities such as i) a European green deal; ii) an economy that works for people; iii) a Europe fit for the digital age; iv) protecting our European way of life; v) a stronger Europe in the world and vi) a new push for European Democracy.
